English: Frans Hals painted the people he associated with, without seeking to flatter and with a uniquely keen eye for individual character. His portraits are very lively and spontaneous. Hals’s great renown also derives from the considerable technical skill he developed in his rendering of faces, skin and textiles.
Svenska: Frans Hals målade av de personer han umgicks med, utan några försök att smickra. Han hade ett unikt öga för den individuella karaktären och hans porträtt är livliga och spontana. Hals är också berömd för sin tekniska skicklighet att återge ansikten, skinn och textil. Med ledning av en teckning av Mathys van den Bergh (1617-1687) från 1655 (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam) har den avporträtterade identifierats som Daniel van Aken. Att döma av teckningen så har målningen beskurits längs alla fyra sidorna och ett draperi på vänster sida har avlägsnats.
